I found a lost dog, what do I do?

Secure the dog first

  1. Move slowly and calmly

  2. Avoid chasing, that makes most dogs run away from you.

  3. Use a leash, slip lead, or even a belt if needed.

  4. If the dog seems scared or defensive, give space and call for help. Even “friendly” dogs may act aggressive or potentially bite when scared/stressed.

Check for ID

  1. Look for a collar and tags

  2. If you are able to, call the phone number immediately

  3. If you are able to safely contain or transport the dog, go to the next step.

Scan for a microchip

The Pit Bull Pen, as well as other local dog rescue organizations, have volunteers available to scan for microchips.

Other locations that can scan for a microchip in the Tri-Cities area are:

This is free and scanning only takes a few minutes. Microchips are often the fastest way home for lost dogs.

Report the found dog

Post the dog you found in social media groups.

Include:

  • Location the dog was found

  • Date/time

  • A clear photo

  • Brief description

If you’re posting on social media or public forums, avoid sharing every detail about the dog.

When someone claims the dog is theirs, ask them to identify specific details (e.g., scars, collar color, or the color/shape of their ID tag).

A dog’s true owner will understand and appreciate the extra verification.

Lost Dogs of King County also has some great information regarding finding a stray dog.

The Pit Bull Pen foster dogs wear a MyLuckyTag QR code tag.

If you find a Pit Bull Pen foster dog:

  1. Secure the dog safely (if you’re able).

  2. Scan the QR code on the tag using your phone’s camera.

  3. Scanning the QR code will provide you with phone numbers to call.

Scanning the tag will also instantly notify us so we can reunite them with their foster or have one of our volunteers come get them as quickly as possible.
